1. Pick and place
Tap a piece in the tray, then tap a square. Tap a placed piece to take it back. With a piece selected, tap a taken square to swap the two.
Place all your pieces on the grid and get the highest score you can. The Relationship Matrix tells you which pairs of pieces want to be close and which want to be far apart.

Each number belongs to one pair of pieces: find the row of one piece and the column of the other. Here circle + square = +2.
A plus number means “come together”. Points = weight × (max distance − distance). On 4×4, a +2 pair side by side gives 2 × (6 − 1) = 10.
A minus number means “keep away”. Points = weight × distance. On 4×4, a −3 pair in opposite corners gives 3 × 6 = 18. A 0 pair gives no points.
Distance is the number of steps up, down, left or right (no diagonal steps). The biggest distance is corner to corner: 6 on a 4×4 grid.
Try to reach the max score; “Gap” shows how far you are. “Show optimal overlay” draws a best layout as outlines. On big levels the max is the best the computer found.
